i was convinced this would end with the guy giving it a cig
fuan no tane is awesome. it manages to have jumpscares (of a sort) in a completely static comic. relative to junji ito, the only horror mangaka a lot of people are familiar with, i’d say fuan no tane is a lot less *gross*, but maybe scarier?
i guess one way to describe it might be to say that junji ito’s things are about normal people falling into extraordinary, grotesque circumstances. fuan no tane features a little bit of something extraordinary or grotesque dropping into a normal person’s life in places or situations that would be totally mundane otherwise, like a window, this guy taking a smoke break on a balcony, a staircase, a sign on a wall, etc .
junji ito’s been compared to lovecraft a lot, and i think that’s pretty accurate. not just because they both write WEIRD HORROR, but the general theme and direction of their stories (people aimlessly spirallng into grotesque cosmic horror beyond their control to meet uncertain offscreen fates)
fuan no tane’s more like (good) creepypasta.

Fuan no Tane is a GREAT. I offered it as an option for the graphic novel club’s manga week and nearly everyone read it and reported back to me that it make it hard for them to sleep at night, but they wanted more (so I pointed the kids towards Fuan no Tane Plus). I think what really works about it is that the events are just mildly unsettling. just creepy enough to put you a little on-edge, since it’s nothing hugely out of the ordinary most of the time. things that your brain could trick you into thinking are real when you’re very tired. and the fact that the things are never explained just make them creepier, because you can fill in the gaps with whatever scares you the most.

man I adore Fuan no Tane.
